Summer Term - Will you read me a story? Where will we go?

Welcome to the magical world of fairytales!

Was the Big Bad Wolf really so bad? How many bowls of porridge did Goldilocks eat? Let’s find out more about our favourite stories, and discover some new ones. This half term, we’ll play imaginatively with a model castle and small world characters. We’ll look at different character types, and decide whether our favourite characters are ‘goodies’ or ‘baddies’! Using different materials and shapes, we will build castles and bridges. We’ll read lots of stories and look at the ingredients that go into a fantastic fairy tale. We’ll be brave explorers and hunt for missing items from fairytales. Reading The Elves and the Shoemaker will encourage us to be busy elves and decorate shoes in our workshop. Contemporary versions of fairy tales will inspire us to write stories, and we’ll create story maps to retell familiar tales. Our mathematical skills will help us to count the buttons on gingerbread men, and estimate how many beans Jack has got! After reading The Enormous Turnip we’ll plant seeds and learn how to care for them. We’ll also test the right materials to make a bed for a princess and houses for the Three Little Pigs.

AUTUMN TERM 2021

This term, Dosbarth Dewi will be focusing on Why I am special? as they immerse themselves in a new year, and for some, a new school and experience. Through quality texts, the children will learn how to talk about themselves and others. They will explore the similarities and differences between the children in their class and the world around them. We will investigate about children all over the world, their everyday lives, and how even though they may not look the same, inside they are alike. From this the children will be discussing what makes them special, and talking about what they have learnt about their new friends.

Through our topic we will be learning how we can build relationships with the people in our school community, and how to ask questions to learn about each other. We will be developing our friendship and collaboration skills through learning about the languages especially Welsh and British Sign Language all the while building good relationships with our peers.

as iPads, recording equipment and talking tins. We will even be learning how to programme a computer using basic algorithms through the use of Beebots.

In Maths activities this half term will focus on shape and place value. We will be ensuring the children have a deep understanding of shape and size through a series of sorting activities, and identifying their properties. The children will then move onto understanding the value of numbers and how to recognise amounts, before moving on to addition of numbers.

The children’s physical skills are developed daily in the outdoor provision, with accessibility to climbing frames, bikes and scooters, and other activities to enhance their gross and fine motor skills.  We will also have the expertise of Coach Anais for discrete PE.

As part of the theme of the children will be using their knowledge of shape to create sculptures of the different types of houses we live in. The models will be decorated taking inspiration from the artist Hundertwasser. They will develop their imaginative skills as they role play different cultural stories, draw self-portraits and learn new songs.

In line with all Catholics schools we will be following Come and See programme our first topic is ‘Families’ We will also be investigating other religions.

Our indoor and outdoor continuous provision is tailored to the needs and interests of the children. Each station is designed to inspire in-depth learning through play, where children are free to enhance and develop their learning and skills as they wish.

The children have access to high quality reading books every day, which they can access independently.
